Mayor reveals affordable homes plan for London
London mayor Boris Johnson has revealed that plans are in place to
deliver more than 37,000 affordable homes in the capital.
The mayor had pledged to create 50,000 such properties over three
years and an agreement has now been reached with 14 boroughs for
more than 16,750 of these.
In addition, the other 19 London boroughs have identified the
potential for 20,500 more - bringing the total past three-quarters
of Mr Johnson's target.
"This is extremely encouraging news for Londoners who are looking
for their first step on the housing ladder and a much-needed boost
for the construction industry during the current economic
downturn," he remarked.
According to the mayor, each of the boroughs will be expected to
decide which type of housing is most appropriate for their
individual needs.
Last month the Scottish government announced that £17 million
of funding would be brought forward in order to help provide more
affordable housing.
